Créé en 1994, j’avais à cœur de marquer la création de mon atelier à Fontevraud-L’Abbaye en réalisant une œuvre qui s’inscrive dans sa géographie et met en valeur les spécificités de l’enluminure d’art au pochoir.
J’ai choisi de reproduire une vue du château de Saumur, les quais et avec au premier plan, une gabare naviguant sur la Loire. Ce sujet très technique me permettait de travailler en épaisseur les matières premières choisies pour élaborer mes couleurs principales, tuffeau et ardoise, et de poser mes couleurs en transparence, notamment pour la Loire et la gabare. J’ai utilisé le tuffeau pour la partie murale du château, l’ardoise pour sa toiture.
Seule l’absence totale de mécanisation ou de passage sous presse dans l’enluminure d’art au pochoir autorise l’utilisation de produits particuliers, de les poser en épaisseur.
Ce sujet multiplié à une soixantaine d’exemplaires fut parrainé par la ville de Saumur, propriétaire des deux premiers exemplaires, et soutenu par son maire d’alors, Monsieur Jean-Paul Hugot, à l’origine de la création de la Fondation du Patrimoine.
Une exposition fut organisée à la mairie de Saumur en novembre 1995 pour présenter l’estampe et l’enluminure d’art au pochoir.

Founded in 1994, I was keen to mark the creation of my workshop in Fontevraud-l’Abbaye by creating a work that fits into its geography and highlights the specificities of the art of stencil illumination.
I chose to reproduce a view of the castle of Saumur, the quays and with a barge sailing on the Loire in the foreground. This very technical subject allowed me to work in thickness the raw materials chosen to develop my main colors, local limestone and slate, and to apply my colors in transparency, in particular for the Loire and the barge. I used limestone for the wall part of the castle, slate for its roof.
Only the total absence of mechanization or passage under a press in stencil illumination allows the use of such particular products and to apply them in thickness.
This subject, multiplied to less than sixty copies, was sponsored by the city of Saumur, owner of the first two copies, and supported by its mayor at the time, Mr. Jean-Paul Hugot, at the origin of the creation of the french Heritage Foundation.
An exhibition was organized at the Saumur town hall in November 1995 to present the print and the art of stencil illumination.
